A predawn observer captured a thin curl of vapor rising from a steel pipe on a sealed grain bin for eleven minutes-breath-like puffs that led to one desperate question: was someone alive beneath the bin? That single detail, recorded at 6:47-6:58 a.m., would become the only visible sign connecting rescuers to a woman buried eleven feet deep-so how did eleven minutes of video and one narrow air column keep her alive?
In this episode, we tell what happened on March 14 when a routine inspection became a near-fatal grain entrapment, how a camera operator’s call at 6:49 prompted a response, and why a thin steel auger intake pipe mattered more than anyone expected. Could the vapor Scott Norris filmed really be the difference between life and death?
Person: Emily Vogel
Date: March 14
Location: Cassel Agricultural Cooperative, Dellmore, Indiana
Time observed on video: 6:47-6:58 a.m.
Duration trapped: 1 hour 22 minutes
- Scott Norris was parked 200 yards east of the grain bins and recorded vapor rising from a steel pipe starting at 6:47 a.m.
- He called 9-1-1 at 6:49 a.m. after seeing intervals of vapor appearing at 90 seconds or less.
- Emily Vogel fell through a bridged grain surface, dropping 11 feet in less than two seconds; the grain closed over her in 90 seconds.
- The three bins were 62 feet tall with roughly 38,000 bushels capacity each; she entered the bin at approximately 8:22 a.m.
- Emily survived by pressing her face to the auger intake pipe 14 inches from its interior opening and breathed through that column of air for 1 hour and 22 minutes.
