Who decides what is right or wrong? And why should we trust their judgment?
Throughout history, governments, institutions, and entire societies have justified actions we now consider profoundly immoral. Wars have been fought in the name of justice. Innocent people have suffered in the name of security. And those responsible have often believed they were doing the right thing.
But if morality is shaped by human reasoning, culture, laws, and beliefs, what makes one person's moral judgment more legitimate than another's?
In Episode 3 of Conversation with AI — “Morality,” I challenge AI to examine the foundations of right and wrong.
Can an entire society be morally wrong? Does believing an action is justified make it morally acceptable? Is morality an objective truth waiting to be discovered, or a human construction that changes over time?
And then the conversation turns toward AI itself.
If artificial intelligence had been developed 200 years ago, would it have confidently defended practices we condemn today?
If AI learns from human history, values, and judgments, can it escape humanity's moral failures—or will it reproduce them with greater confidence, authority, and scale?
Perhaps the most unsettling question isn't whether AI can distinguish right from wrong.
It's whether an intelligence created by morally fallible humans can ever claim moral authority over them.
