Today’s reading covers 1 Samuel 14 and Proverbs 19:1–8. The reflection follows Jonathan and his armor-bearer as they attack a Philistine garrison in faith, trusting that the Lord can save “by many or by few,” which triggers panic among the Philistines and causes them to turn on each other. Saul’s rash vow forbidding anyone to eat before evening nearly costs Jonathan his life after he unknowingly breaks it, and the people’s intervention to save him highlights a growing contrast between Saul’s self-directed leadership and the kind of king Israel was warned about back in chapter 8.
Proverbs 19:1–8 covers several short lessons on integrity and wisdom. Integrity matters more than wealth or status, and people should avoid crooked speech and foolishness. Acting hastily without real knowledge leads to missteps, and folly can bring ruin that people sometimes blame on God rather than their own choices. Wealth is noted as drawing many friends while poverty can leave a person abandoned, prompting a call to examine one’s own motives in relationships, and the passage closes with a warning about false witnesses facing judgment and an encouragement toward pursuing lasting wisdom and understanding.
