A misplaced Flemish oil painting worth up to $90,000 was found wrapped in acid-free linen inside a sub-basement wall just eight feet from the vault where a copy of the same work remained logged and accounted for - how could two identical paintings exist in a locked museum? Who altered the records and why would a registrar stay composed when the collection’s core truth unraveled?
In this episode, we walk through the discovery, the paperwork trail, and the people who managed the Aldren Municipal Museum's collection as the central question hangs: was this a deliberate substitution, and if so, who executed it?
Person: Marie Walker
Person: Janet Holm
Person: Chad Webb
Date: November 14, 2011
Location: Aldren Municipal Museum sub-basement
- The painting was catalogued as locked inside the museum vault for the past 25 years.
- The vault was eight feet away from where the painting was wedged flat against the wall studs.
- The panel painting measures 18 by 24 inches and was acquired in 1986.
- Vault access log showed 11 after-hours access events by Chad Webb over a 13-week window between September and November 2010.
- A 2006 condition report contained a seven-word marginal annotation referencing a 2004 photo and a "minor tonal shift, panel edge, lower left."
