Adrenaline and dread: a single one-third mile GPS error redirected an 18-hour search while Gina Brown waited alone on an unnamed limestone plateau at 8,200 feet with a cold front approaching - how did a harmless software average nearly kill her?
In this episode, we tell the story of what happened to Gina Brown after her paraglider landed on a plateau with sheer faces and no trail, and how a subtle GPS processing decision sent rescuers the wrong way; can a twelve-minute block of identical coordinates mask the difference between life and death?
Person: Gina Brown
Age: 28
Date: February 7, 2019
Location: Sable Range plateau at 8,200 feet
Track error: computed position ~1/3 mile from actual
- Gina had logged 430 hours of paragliding flight time by February 2019.
- Her pre-flight checklist was timed at exactly 12 minutes, run in sequence every time.
- The GPS unit recorded 24 identical coordinate points between 2:26 and 2:38 PM on February 7.
- Search teams spent 18 hours looking in talus and pine forest below the western approach with temperatures down to 12°F and NW winds of 15-20 mph.
- The plateau where Gina landed measured roughly the size of three city blocks with sheer limestone faces dropping 60-200 feet on every side.
