Copper the dog sat down and refused to move, and that single act led Brenda Barrett to a rolled canvas hidden in a drainage culvert two blocks from the Caraway Institute; the painting found matched the size of the museum’s missing work but investigators later concluded it was almost certainly not the original-who swapped the labels and why would a conservator hide a discovery instead of reporting it?
In this episode, we walk through the sequence of events from the October 10, 2017 discovery to the earlier conservation work that set the stage, describing the people involved, the technical findings, and the private months of preparation that produced a near-perfect copy; how did a professional conservator come to produce a forgery and conceal prior evidence that would have changed the painting’s provenance?
Person: Brenda Barrett
Date: October 10, 2017
Location: alley two blocks from the Caraway Institute
Person: Jessica Boyd
Event: condition examination in spring 2016
- Copper, a three-year-old rescue mix, sat down in front of a drainage culvert and would not move on October 10, 2017.
- The rolled canvas discovered measured 24 by 30 inches with a wooden stretcher frame pressed against the interior wall.
- Evening on the Flats was completed in 1891 by Thomas Adwell and had been at the Caraway since 1947.
- Jessica Boyd, age 38 and nine years into her role as senior conservator, found an additional paint layer under the visible surface and about 40% of the visible surface showed twentieth-century retouching.
- Boyd spent eleven months producing a copy precise enough to occupy the Adwell’s frame by early 2017 and sourced period pigments from Howard Brill, a retired paint chemist in western Pennsylvania.
