A recording exists that should not. It was made by a scientist, Dr. Samuel Russell, who was already dead according to all physical evidence, yet his calm voice describes something climbing from the dark by the Nile River. What impossible confession did he leave behind?
In this episode, we uncover the unsettling story of Dr. Samuel Russell, an archaeologist who stumbled upon a wooden crate with five layered shipping labels spanning 140 years and four continents. Inside, a defaced Predynastic Egyptian stone tablet led him to a secret tomb in the Sahara Desert, built not for treasure, but to hold something inside.
Person: Dr. Samuel Russell
Location: Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow
Artifact: Predynastic Egyptian stone tablet
Origin: Sahara Desert
Previous Owner: Dr. Fitzsimmons
- Dr. Samuel Russell traveled from New York to Glasgow for a "routine favor" at the Kelvingrove Museum.
- He found a wooden crate with five shipping labels, having crossed four continents and six cities over a century.
- Inside the crate was a Predynastic Egyptian stone tablet, catalogued in 1883, with its inscription deliberately defaced.
- Russell secretly used modern imaging techniques to recover the inscription, which pointed to a tomb in the Sahara Desert.
- Dr. Fitzsimmons, who found the tablet in the Sahara, wrote a letter repeating "A thing of ash" before disappearing.
