A clean burgundy dress shoe was found three feet down on a stone shelf inside a hand-pump well, size six and spotless-while the woman's body lay in cordgrass sixty yards away; who would place a shoe in the dark where no mud or grit could reach it? What connection links that impossible placement, a broken hasp on a tool locker, and a Shore Patrol investigator who named a suspect in 1943 but could not make an arrest?
In this episode, we tell the story of Amy Stewart and the sequence of discoveries-from the scene in cottage six to the well and the cordgrass-that set a wartime town on edge, and we follow the clues that raise the question: how did a tradesman come to be the focus of suspicion when the cottage itself seemed to record the crime?
Person: Amy Stewart
Date: September 7, 1943 (last seen)
Location: Carver Terrace cottages, Morrow Bay
Cause: Strangulation (time of death between evening of Sept 7 and early Sept 8)
Person: Howard Berry (37, plumber)
- A burgundy leather woman's dress shoe, size six, was found on a stone service shelf three feet down inside the well, dry and clean with a silver buckle.
- Amy Stewart, age 24, was last seen walking to cottage six after choir practice on the evening of September 7, 1943; her body was found in cordgrass on September 14, 1943.
- Dr. Philip Carne estimated time of death between the evening of September 7 and the early hours of September 8 and recorded strangulation with ligature marks on her wrists.
- Inside cottage six the bed was made, supper dishes were washed and stacked, a library book lay open face-down on the table, and Amy's purse with her ration book hung by the front door; one right dress shoe sat beside the door while the left was in the well.
- Shore Patrol liaison David Hayes noted the sink window had a direct, unobstructed line of sight to the well casing and compiled a list of tradesmen who had entered Carver Terrace, with plumber Howard Berry appearing more times than any other.
