The Mug on the Burn Scar: Why He Walked Out Alive

Everywhere else in the burn scar was ash - except for a clean, threaded aluminum mug sitting spotless on a flat boulder. A man had been missing six days, helicopters had stopped flying, and yet something about that untouched mug overturned the official assumption: why would someone who logged "staying with station" leave an intact cup behind and then reappear alive?

In this episode, we tell the sequence of events from the morning of November 8, 2019 through the search days that followed, laying out the log entries, the conditions, and the evidence found at Tarbell Station to ask: what did William Snyder know that made him leave and then survive?

Person: William Snyder
Date: November 8, 2019 (last log entry) and November 14, 2019 (search suspended)
Location: Tarbell Station, Greloch National Forest
Status: Missing then found alive; search suspended November 14, 2019
Event: Primary fire ran Pell Creek Canyon at approximately 9:15 AM

- Snyder logged conditions at 6:00 AM with humidity in the twenties and a Red Flag Warning active.
- At 8:02 AM he logged smoke at 260 degrees, approximately three miles out, and radioed dispatch.
- At approximately 9:15 AM the primary fire ran through Pell Creek Canyon, destroying the only road out.
- At 9:34 AM his last logbook entry read "fire behavior extreme, road access lost" followed by "Staying with station."
- A librarian found the threaded, dented 16-ounce aluminum travel mug on a boulder in the burn scar while the area still smoldered.
