Jason and Dee at the Surely You Can’t Be Serious podcast threw down the gauntlet, Accidental Legends picked it up, and this REO Speedwagon episode was born. You know the songs. You probably know every word. But what happened before REO became a permanent fixture on your radio?

Matthew and Dirk explore the unlikely pairing of Kevin Cronin and Gary Richrath: a folk singer with hustle and a guitarist with very different ideas about rock and roll. Before the familiar hits came college gigs, shifting lineups, bruised egos, and a band still figuring out who it wanted to be.

There are strange beginnings, competing recollections, unexpected connections, and songs that didn’t arrive sounding like the records you remember. How does a band survive when its strongest creative voices aren’t always hearing the same thing?Join us for the messy, funny, stubbornly human story behind the music you can’t help singing.
