A single gray-and-teal New Balance 860, size seven and a half, labeled "L. Duncan," turned up on top of a sealed box of canned corn inside a storage room that had been locked for seven days - no broken window, no forced entry, no footprints. Why did a shoe missing from an assault scene two miles away appear in a locked church storeroom three days after the victim was found, and who had access to that room?
In this episode, we lay out the timeline and concrete evidence from the March 2019 disappearance and recovery of Lisa Duncan and the later discovery of her missing left shoe, tracing the people, places, and items connected to the shoe's unexpected appearance. What does the shoe’s condition and location reveal about the events between the March eighth welfare check and the March fourteenth discovery?
Person: Lisa Duncan
Date: March 8-14, 2019
Location: Pelton County Riverwalk and Calvary Lutheran Church storage room
Person: Gregory Romano
Person: Richard Bennett
- At 7:42 AM on March 14, 2019, Gregory Romano unlocked the storage room at Calvary Lutheran Church and found the left New Balance shoe sitting on top of a sealed box of canned corn.
- Lisa Duncan, age 24, was found alive on March 11 with blunt trauma to the skull, a laceration on her left forearm, and her right New Balance still on her foot; the left shoe was missing.
- The missing shoe is a gray-and-teal New Balance 860, size 7.5, with "L. Duncan" written on the tongue in permanent marker and laces double-knotted.
- The storage room had been locked since the previous Thursday, March 7, when facilities manager Howard Peltz last locked it before a cardiac event; there were two keys, held by Peltz and Gregory Romano.
- Investigators found a folded blue tarp with Richard Bennett’s DNA approximately 60 feet from where Lisa was found; Bennett was arrested March 13 and searches of his truck and apartment did not recover the missing shoe.
