Nobody wants to talk about it.

And yet, at some point, someone in your family is going to have to deal with the will that was never updated, the junk drawer that was never cleaned out, and possibly (if you're related to anyone like the people at this table) a chest freezer in the garage with very specific instructions.

In this episode of Connected Chaos: The Family Table, we went somewhere most families avoid until they absolutely cannot: death, dying, and the mess- emotional and otherwise- that gets left behind when we don't plan for it.

Shawn opens by sharing that a chance encounter at the library led him to a will and trust seminar that changed how he thinks about what he's leaving his daughter. Melinda talks about the gift of a mother who started a notepad list, color-coded stickers, and a room-by-room process that turned a hard moment into something almost beautiful. And Lisa- who by her own admission may have a genetic hoarding condition- floats the idea of being preserved in a chest freezer just in case medical science catches up in time. Her family is reportedly still processing this. Ha.

We talk about Swedish death cleaning, the difference between a will and a trust, why "I have everything in order" from a Great Depression-era grandfather may not mean what you think it means, and why the greatest gift you can leave the people you love is a plan- even if it is just scribbled in a notebook.
