First published in 1907, The Mystery of the Yellow Room is widely regarded as one of the earliest and finest examples of the "locked-room mystery" — a puzzle so meticulously built that Gaston Leroux included diagrams of the crime scene so readers could try to solve it for themselves. Leroux, who would later write the immortal Phantom of the Opera, brings the same gift for atmosphere and misdirection here, layering red herrings and reversals until the truth lands as a genuine shock.
Decades before Agatha Christie or John Dickson Carr perfected the form, Leroux laid its foundation, and critics still rank this novel among the greatest mysteries ever written. If you love a fair-play puzzle where every clue sits in plain sight yet the solution stays impossible to see coming, this is where the genre truly begins.
