What should you bring to your first meeting with an interior designer, and how do you know the design is moving in the right direction? Jessica Jensen of Stylescape Studio joins Tony Calvis, Jr. on The Calvis Wyant Podcast to walk through the decisions behind a custom home's interior.

Jessica recommends arriving with a budget, a timeline, and visual references. You don't need to have every answer, or even have your architect and builder selected. She explains how she helps clients make sense of their inspiration, understand the next step, and become comfortable with decisions they'll live with for years.

That work starts with conversations about the homeowners' daily lives. Children, pets, or a parent moving in can change what a home needs to accommodate. Marble may suit someone who welcomes its patina and frustrate someone who expects it to stay pristine. Spending follows the client's priorities too: someone who rarely cooks may still want a kitchen with visual impact.

To make progress visible, Jessica walks clients through a mock presentation at the outset and explains what each meeting will accomplish. She describes how she paces selections to manage decision fatigue, then records the details for construction. A separate, color-coded cabinet hardware drawing gives the trades a clear view of which pull belongs on which door.

The discussion also covers bringing the designer in with the architect, evaluating a builder's communication and systems, and the cost of revisiting layouts once construction is underway. Jessica explains why a contemporary interior with fewer finishes demands close attention to each detail.

Later, she shares how floor plans become elevations and 3D renderings, where AI helps, and what it still misses about scale, codes, and buildability.
