There was a moment in a carport. My father said something that attacked everything a boy needs to survive — my masculinity, my pride, my desperate need to be accepted and loved.

The boy drew a conclusion: I am not enough.

And for the next forty years — every achievement was that man arguing with a conclusion a boy made in a carport.

No achievement could ever win that argument. Because it wasn't about achievement. It was about worth. And worth can't be earned. It can only be received.

Healing required me to go back to that carport — hand in hand with Jesus. Not to change what happened. But to hear what God says about that boy — instead of what his father said.

That's healing in progress.

TRANSCRIPT:

Hi, I'm Bill — and this is The Warrior Medic.
There was a moment in a carport.
I was a boy. My father said something to me.
I'm not going to tell you the specific words.
What I will tell you is what they did.
They attacked everything a boy needs to survive.
My masculinity. My pride.
My desperate need to be accepted and loved
by the man who was supposed to model all of those things for me.
That was the installation.
And the boy drew a conclusion.
Not consciously. Not deliberately.
But inevitably.
He decided he was not enough.
That the most important man in his life
had looked at him — really looked at him —
and found him wanting.
And for the next forty years —
every achievement, every promotion, every success —
was that man arguing with a conclusion
a boy made in a carport.
No achievement could ever win that argument.
Because the argument wasn't about achievement.
It was about worth.
And worth can't be earned.
It can only be received.
Healing required me to go back to that carport —
hand in hand with Jesus.
Not to change what happened.
But to hear what God says about that boy —
instead of what his father said.
That's healing in progress.
