This episode of The Wild Goddess, I'm sharing a story from the world of Mossvale, woven through with old bird folklore, and carrying a piece of wisdom that feels particularly tender this week.
A Place Worth Landing is the tale of Mr. Hawthorn Birdsfoot — a fairy with a dream that nobody else could quite see yet. And for a long time, the world told him that wasn't enough.
This story moves through the old folklore of three birds the wren, who flew highest not by being the strongest but by being patient and clever; the robin, who kept the hearth warm through the coldest winters; and the woodpecker, who worked with the grain of things rather than against them.
The things worth building take time. And they ask you to keep going even when no one else can see where you're headed yet.
This episode feels especially meaningful to me this week, because Through the Hedge: Tales from Mossvale, my debut collection of stories from the world of Mossvale, is out now. This book is my own Wonky Perch. My own sign that went up slightly crooked and stayed that way, because nothing about the journey was straight.
If you are in the middle of building something that the world hasn't caught up with yet, this one is for you.
