A county surveyor found adult boot prints coming out of the Soline River on March 18, 2009 - flat-soled, twelve feet up the bank, and stopping at the gravel lot with no prints on either end to explain them. Who could have walked out of the water in the dead of night when the only ferry had been chained to the dock for hours?
In this episode, we follow the events described in the official record and witness statements: the ferry schedule, the photographed prints, and the actions of one woman who crossed the river alone at night. How do the footprints, the ferry log, and a midnight skiff crossing fit together?
Person: Thomas Chambers
Date: March 18, 2009
Location: Soline River / Soline Crossing and Prosper Dock
Event: Boot prints emerging from river and stopping at gravel lot
Person: Janet Weber
- Prints measured nine to twelve millimeters deep, consistent with a person likely over two hundred pounds.
- Prints emerged from the waterline and walked twelve feet in a perfectly straight line up the bank, then stopped at the gravel lot.
- The Meridian Star ferry made its last run at 11:45 PM and remained chained to Prosper Dock until 5:15 AM, per longtime schedule.
- Janet Weber boarded the ferry at Prosper Dock and arrived at Soline Crossing at 11:02 PM, later returned on a departure at 11:06 PM and arrived back at 11:37 PM at her sister's house.
- At approximately 2:30 AM Janet untied Phil Ostergaard’s aluminum skiff, crossed the quarter-mile river alone in the dark, tied the skiff at the east bank south piling, and drove home.
