- Teresa Wallin, age 22 and three months pregnant, was found dead on January 23, 1978, with a cleaned kitchen knife placed back in the dish rack and a yogurt cup coated with dried blood nearby.
- Richard Chase had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia at age 23 and had a documented history of killing rabbits and drinking their blood.
- Chase was involuntarily committed to Beverly Manor in April 1976, released on September 29, 1976, and staff had found dead birds drained of blood on the grounds.
- On December 27, 1977, Chase retrieved his car from police custody, bought a .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol that day, and hours later fired a shot through a kitchen window that passed through a woman's hair.
