We were raised strict but with our own kids, we are parenting differently.
Today, 98% of millennial parents now talk to their kids about mental health, compared to just a fraction of their own parents. In this episode, We get into what it actually looks like raising black children in America as millennial West African women.
We discussed the difficulties we experienced in talking to kids about race and how our upbringing influences our parenting philosophies; From liberating ways to encourage confidence and open dialogue, to breaking free from fears we inherited. We also delve deeper into what gentle parenting is; why it’s hard and if we are for it or not.
This one is for every mom in diaspora, who’s figuring it out in real time, without a village, without a manual, and without anyone who truly gets the specific thing you're navigating.
We still don't have all the answers. In fact, we want yours. If you've raised older kids in the diaspora, we need your advice. Drop it in the comments.
