In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore how Badr al-Jamali seized power, restored order, and became the first in a line of de facto rulers known as the viziers of the sword. We trace his journey from a Christian slave in the Byzantine Empire to a commander in Fatimid Syria, his brutal suppression of the Turkish mercenaries who had ravaged Egypt, and his construction of the great gates of Cairo—Bab al-Nasr and Bab al-Futuh—that still stand today. We also examine the controversial nature of his rule: a Christian at the head of an Islamic empire, a military strongman who sidelined the caliph, and a man whose legacy would shape the Fatimid state for decades.
