A proposito di questo titolo

Brazil’s history is a vast, often brutal epic: from the Tupi-Guaraní civilizations that met Portuguese caravels in 1500, through three centuries of colonial slavery, the gold rush of Minas Gerais, and the rise of a tropical empire that outlasted its European counterparts. Lucas and Luna explore how the Portuguese Crown, Jesuit missions, and African enslaved peoples shaped a society unlike any other in the Americas. They trace the arc from the first hereditary captaincies (capitanias hereditárias) to the transfer of the Portuguese court in 1808, the bloody war for independence led by Dom Pedro I, and the paradoxical reign of Dom Pedro II—an emperor who abolished slavery in 1888 but was toppled by a republican coup the next year. The show delves into the rubber boom in the Amazon, the destruction of quilombos like Palmares, the messy transition to republic, the Estado Novo dictatorship of Getúlio Vargas, the military regime of 1964–1985, and the fragile democracy that followed. Why does Brazil remain the country of the future? Because its past—of sugar, gold, coffee, and iron—still pulses in its racial inequality, its Amazonian frontier, its carnival, and its sprawling cities. Join Lucas and Luna as they untangle South America’s giant, episode by episode.

  • The Brazilian Empire's Last War: Paraguay 1864-1870 — Fexingo History
    Apr 26 2026
In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the devastating War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), the deadliest conflict in South American history. They focus on the figure of Solano López, the Paraguayan dictator whose ambitions triggered a war that killed over half of Paraguay's population. Lucas explains how Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay allied to crush Paraguay, the brutal battles at Tuyutí and Curupaity, and the war's legacy: it bankrupted the Brazilian Empire, hastened the abolition of slavery, and paved the way for the republic. They also discuss the role of the Viscount of Mauá in financing the war effort, and how the war devastated Paraguay for generations. Listeners learn about the Marques of Caxias, Brazil's leading general, and the controversial final years of Dom Pedro II's reign, which the war helped undermine.

  • The Rubber Boom: Amazonian Wealth and Cruelty — Fexingo History
    Apr 25 2026
In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the Amazon Rubber Boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries—a period of immense wealth and brutal exploitation that transformed the Brazilian Amazon. They discuss how the invention of vulcanization created insatiable global demand for rubber, the rise of rubber barons like the infamous 'Red Baron' of the Amazon, and the systematic enslavement of Indigenous and Northeastern migrants under debt peonage. The conversation covers the city of Manaus, which became a lavish Paris-of-the-tropics with a grand opera house, while workers died in the forests. They also touch on the mysterious deaths of Henry Wickham, who smuggled rubber seeds to Kew Gardens, leading to the collapse of Brazil's monopoly. Finally, they reflect on the legacy of this era in the context of modern Amazonian issues like deforestation and the rights of Indigenous peoples.

  • The Coffee Baron Who Tried to Save the Empire — Fexingo History
    Apr 25 2026
In the 1840s, as Brazil's empire consolidated under Dom Pedro II, a coffee baron from the Paraíba Valley named Irineu Evangelista de Sousa — later the Viscount of Mauá — launched an audacious industrial and infrastructure campaign that nearly transformed Brazil into a modern nation on par with the United States. Mauá built Brazil's first railway (the Estrada de Ferro Petrópolis), the first ironworks, a steamship line, and a banking empire. But his visionary projects collided with entrenched slaveholding elites who saw industrialization as a threat to their power. When the Paraguayan War (1864–1870) drained imperial coffers and Mauá's credit lines collapsed, he was scapegoated, arrested, and died in poverty. This episode weaves his story into Brazil's larger struggle between feudal agrarian interests and modernization — a conflict that would ultimately help destabilize the monarchy itself. We also explore the link between coffee, slavery, and the Paraíba Valley's 'coffee barons' who controlled the empire's politics and economy.
