In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the long, often overlooked reign of Shah Tahmasp I, the second Safavid ruler. While his father Ismail I is remembered as a fiery founder, Tahmasp ruled for over fifty years, defending the fragile empire against the Ottomans and Uzbeks, relocating the capital from Tabriz to Qazvin, and centralizing Twelver Shiism as a state religion. We discuss his childhood trauma after Chaldiran, his fraught relationship with the Qizilbash, his patronage of Persian miniature painting—including a famous illustrated Shahnameh—and his controversial decision to move the capital. Tahmasp also sheltered the Mughal emperor Humayun, forging a Persian-Mughal alliance. We examine the legend of his religious piety, his ban on music and wine, and the succession crisis that followed his death, setting the stage for Shah Abbas the Great. This is the story of a reluctant ruler who held the empire together when it could have shattered.
