In a heartwarming tale of friendship and compassion, three eleven-year-old girls find themselves united by fate, forming an unbreakable bond as the Dearwas. Together, they team up with a group of neighborhood boys, the Detectives, to create the Band of Mercy—a club devoted to the humane treatment of animals. Their shared philosophy, articulated by one of the girls, emphasizes the importance of kindness if someone wrongs you, let it go; if someone shows you kindness, find a way to repay it. Carolyn Verhoeff, a passionate advocate for animal welfare and former president of the Kentucky Animal Rescue League, inspired this story. Her legacy lives on, notably with the dedication of the Carolyn Verhoeff Animal Care Center at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1963.
