This is the very first episode of Smashing PBs, hosted by Forty Thieves co-founder Shyr Godfrey.

For the opening conversation, Shyr sits down with her husband and business partner, Brent Godfrey, who leads Finance and Operations at Forty Thieves. Together, while raising three children, they’ve grown their business, with 2025 marking a huge year of growth - including over 500% growth within one of New Zealand’s largest supermarket chains.

Brent reflects on the role sport played in shaping his mindset from a young age, and how the discipline, consistency and grit he learned through training - especially on the days he didn’t feel like showing up - laid the foundation for building and running a high-growth FMCG business. He also shares his thoughts on the importance of goal setting, alongside the reality that running a business is often messy, unpredictable and chaotic.

He remembers some of his earliest sporting memories, unpacks the mental discipline required to finish 11th in the iconic Auckland Marathon, and speaks openly about the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people to keep you accountable.

Brent also offers a grounded reminder: no matter how fast you might seem to someone else, there’s always someone faster - unless, of course, you’re Kipchoge!

A thoughtful, honest conversation about sport, business, and what it really takes to keep showing up and push your own personal bests.
