Genesis 49: The Lion of the Tribe of Judah Jacob gathers his twelve sons to reveal what shall befall them in the "last days". He rebukes Reuben for his instability and sin, which ultimately cost him the birthright. Simeon and Levi are also disciplined, losing their tribal prominence due to their past cruelty at Shechem. The following information is from outside the sources and may need independent verification: Jacob then gives the pre-eminent blessing to Judah, prophesying that the sceptre shall not depart from his line until Shiloh (the Messiah) comes. This establishes the tribe of Judah as the royal line of David and the earthly lineage of Jesus Christ.
