Sintesi dell'editore

Admired by J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, and considered by W. H. Auden to be "the only English children's book in the same class as the Alice books", The Princess and the Goblin is a classic example of 19th-century children's literary fairy tales. This is an ageless story of courage and loyalty, beauty and honor, mystery and divinity, and above all, the conflict of good and evil.

The discovery of a secret stairway running to the top of the castle leads Princess Irene to a revelation even more weighty than the fiendish plans of the goblin community that miner boy Curdie has discovered. Will the Princess and Curdie understand the significance of what they have found, or will Harelip and the goblins successfully execute their evil plan?

Recommended for children aged 4 to 94.

Not a good choice of narrator

The Princess and the Goblin has been a favorite book since reading it as a young girl. I thought it would be lovely to hear it read as an adult. Would that I had had a sound preview.

Admittedly it can be challenging to find a reader who can effectively portray male and female characters; however, when the main character is a young girl, hearing her portrayed with a raspy male voice that sounds as if it has had too many cigarettes and/ or Scotches is disconcerting.

Excellent fun

I loved it, but wasn't sure my kids (5,9) would understand the language, but found they thoroughly enjoyed it. The reading is clear and well paced, and the rich language was not at all an issue as the context of the story and the vivid narrative made it perfectly comprehensible.

I read this because I went to, "C. S. Lewis on Stage," with Max McLean playing C. S. Lewis. There I heard of Lewis' and Tolkien's admiration for MacDonald and can see why. MacDonald also appears in The Great Divorce. Look forward to meeting them some day. 😎
