Sintesi dell'editore

In a world where there are no rules, there is no greater hero than a 17-year-old girl.

Life at the fortified town of Sanctuary is calm. The people, with their fearless leader at the helm, have created a haven where they can live out their lives in peace and safety.

But it hasn’t always been this way. There were battles and losses along the way, and victory usually came at a price.

With the younger generation coming into their own, it’s time for Leah to pass on all she has learned over the years. Time to tell the stories of how the world became the way it is...starting with the highwaymen of Andorra.

Dance with the one that brought you

Get R.C.Bray back. This was hard to listen to. I liked the story, but the narrator couldn't do it justice.

I couldn't get over the narrating, needed Bray

The whole "After it Happened" series has been fantastic but this one took a big hit with the performance. There were many parts in which Kate reading was fine to good in the performance but the male voices were not at all to my liking. Hearing beloved characters like Dan, Mitch, Neil and others sound the way she made them sound was jarring to me and just when i was pleasantly "into" the story Dan would say something and it was just, well.... not good. I get that doing voices of characters of the opposite sex is tough and its easy to over do them to the point where its silly, that is one big area to me in which RC Bray shines.
I liked the story, and there was no way that i wasn't going to get the book after loving the first 6 - i had to do it and i am still glad i did! BUT i would LOVE to hear it re-done by Bray. In a way i feel it very hard to judge the story and overall rating because of this. I know he is always busy and had to deal with pneumonia which delayed his work and maybe that's why Devon C Ford went with this alternate narrator or maybe he went with a woman because this is "Leah's" story, i dunno.

Poor narrator.

Decent story but not as good as the previous ones. The female English narrator was horrendous. She made the story sound like a children’s lullaby story rather than a post apocalyptic action sci-fi adventure. Her voice impressions of different characters were the worst I’ve ever heard. It was simply painful to listen to and took much away from the book.

Fanfiction?

The performance and perspective shift is absolutely fantastic, however the story itself isn't in line with the original character designs making it feel more like fanfiction.

Finally, we get to hear from Leah's point of view!

Right away, you'll see that we have a new narrator. Don't walk away from the series yet. She's no RC Bray, but Kate Reading grew into each of the voices she portrayed and I was always able to differentiate the characters from each other. In short, she has a gift, she drew me into the story, just like RC.

Next, we are introduced to some new characters, Lucien is my favorite character. Who doesn't love hearing a male French accent, ooh, la, la! Then there's Raffi (spelling??) and Mateo who add some definite character to Sanctuary. Then our old standbys, Dan, Mitch and Neil (my personal favorite) are still on display in this book.

There's plenty of action but there's downtime, too. It's fun to listen to Leah finish the growing up process. I am so glad that I was one of the first to get to listen to Andorra, The Leah Chronicles. I pre-ordered it, then downloaded it on to my phone in the a.m. and I just finished the book. Worth every penny!

Good but had to adjust to the change...

I thought the story was great and I think Reading did a good job narrating, however I had one issue with it. The attitude and personality of Leah didn’t come across as the same girl in the other 6 books. Dan seemed like a bumbling oaf when the narrator portrayed him as well.
It just seemed that maybe Reading didn’t listen to the other books before performing this one. Not enough of an issue to turn me away but it did give some disappointment.

Disappointed and Dumbfounded

I was disappointed that R.C. Bray wasn’t the narrator but loved the 1st 6 books so much I was willing to give this book a try. I’m now pondering returning this book and abandoning what was an excellent series from 1-6.

Within minutes of listening the story was confusing and hard to follow. Not only was the narrator different but it seemed to be written by someone else entirely. Not sure if it was the poor change in storytelling tactic, the narrator or a combination of both. Why did the narrator have an old fashioned condescending British accent? She spoke as if she was speaking down to the listeners telling an entirely new story with no energy or enthusiasm. Where was the excitement all of the other books had? It was gone and replaced with a boring and confusing story and story teller. Why would Leah have developed such a mature and oddly staunch stately British Accent that seemed so out of character? It sounded more like a historical period piece rather than apocalyptic one and it made the entire story hard to get through. Leah was never boring, staunch or stately, nor were any of the first 6 books.

I honestly don’t know what to make of this book. I’m dumbfounded. I was really hoping for Leah to continue the original story telling of new difficulties and adventures. She was young and there was so much more for her to tell us. I was I shocked by the old fashioned aristocratic narrative and I was confused by the entire storyline. It didn’t pick up where the last book left off so I honestly couldn’t adjust to the story and felt lost. It lacked the familiar feel and transition of the previous stories and therefore wasn’t enjoyable as a continuation. You simply shouldn’t have done that to your fans Devon C. Ford. It was a very unexpected bate and switch. Maybe if you’d devoted a chapter reminiscing about what had happened in the last book to tie them together it would have been better. But R.C. Bray was most definitely a must have as we were already familiar with his narration and storytelling style. I ended up stopping book 7 and listening to book 6 again but still had issues tying the two works together and it didn’t make book 7 anymore exciting or enjoyable, just more disappointing.

I am sorry Devon but Kate is the wrong narrator!

I am sorry Devon, but I can't listen to it. I understand why you have taken the path of a female narrator with the switch from third to the first person account, and I do not doubt Kates ability, but unfortunately, I don't feel she is right for the part.
I am a huge fan of After it happened and believe it to be your best writing. You have a definite style and voice that is consistent throughout the series however it's lost within the narration of
The Leah Chronicles.
Your style is still there, but Kates interpretation of Leah is way off. I feel that Kates has not captured any of Leah's personality and she now feels flat. Also when I heard Dan speak for the first time, I literally screamed with anguish!
I always struggle when I hear a woman narrator voice a male role, but I can usually overlook it as they are typically small characters. With that said, Dan is by no means a minor character, and even though he plays a supporting role in The Leah Chronicles, his voice commands an absolute authority that Kate is unable to muster.
Of course, this is all subjective, and others may like it.
However, if you have the option to pull it, I would do it now before the reviews start rolling in and people start returning it like I'm about to.
As I say, I am sorry. I had high hopes for The Leah Chronicles, but sadly Kate has killed it for me.
Fortunately, I have read the book on Kindle, and the reason why I have given the story five stars.

Wrong Narrator!

I have listened to the previous 6 books, and loved them. You cannot change the narrator for book 7! I understand that the main character is female, but it simply did not work to change from R C Bray (male) to Kate Reading (female) as the majority of the characters in the story are male! After purchasing this book, I checked other feedback, and have found that I am not alone.

Great series ruined by awful choice of narrator.

I was glued to the first 6 books of this series. The main character in these was a gruff middle aged man and the narration of RC Bray complimented Dan perfectly, culminating in some of the best audio books I have listened too. This book is about a teenage girl from a single parent family. She is tough, resourceful and streetwise and is a natural extension to the series . Who then at Audible thought it a good idea to revert to Audible type and bring in a middle aged woman, speaking with a boarding school accent, topped of by a frankly bizarre and massively irritating sing song, unnatural inflection to her voice? This has killed the series for me as I am distracted from the story by this truly awful narration.

This narrator has spoiled the story. Her inflection and emphasis is all wrong. The story is great, such a pity.

Great Story ... Poor Performance

As others have said the switch to a female narrator is the obvious choice with the change in perspective from Dan to Leah - Kate for me however is the wrong choice. Leah is a young woman and Dan a middle aged man - the voicing of the characters by Kate has Leah sounding middle aged and Dan a geriatric! It looses all the appeal of the characters to me.

There is also certain inflection to Kate's narration which is maddening to me - the flow of the written text is much superior to the way it is narrated - I would recommended the Kindle version over the Audible version with the current narrator.

Sorry Devon. The AIH series is brilliant, I do genuinely love it - but from now on it will be the Kindle version.

Good story but the wrong narrator

I have no issue with the narrator but don’t think she was right for this book. Narration was better as I got used to it but pretty sure RC Bray would have been better. For any further books in the series I hope more thought is given to this even if it means 2 narrators including RC Bray

Great book except for the performance

The story is great. It gives a very nice picture of the life after sanctuary. Performance wise, not so great. I don't like Dan's voice. It sounds like an old witch rather than a man with authority. Other male voices are OK that's why I'm struggling to understand why the reader gave one of the main characters such an awful voice.
There is also a tone at the end of almost every sentence that I find quite annoying, can't really describe it in words but I'm sure there's someone else sharing my same sentiment.
I would still recommend the book just for its story.

Wow!

After having listened to the previous After it Happened Books, narrated by the Legend that is R C Bray, I had to build myself up to face a different Narrator reading this book. It took me awhile, but finally went for it. And OMG Im so glad I did!

Fast paced without you losing the plot, just made you never want to hit the pause button to listen to later! So Detailed that you just cant stop listening.... Absolutely loved it, Kate Reading does a fantastic Job at being Leah!

Its wonderful to hear the in between bits of the previous AIH books! So get yourself a drink of some sort, some snacks perhaps and press play.... and be prepared to not to hit pause for a long while 😄 Bows down to Devon C Ford for yet another great book !

Great story, great characters, dismal narration.

I was very much looking forward to the next in the series of this wonderful tale. However, I feel it was totally spoiled by the narration. Hugely lacking in the gruff, passion and attitude for the main character Leah, i just couldn't get past how inappropriate her style of narration was both for the characters i have come to love and connect with, and with the overall story itself. There was no flow, no passion, no vigor or intensity especially in the finale. So very unfortunate. I wont be purchasing the next book, because the choice of narrator totally spoils the experience. Ruins it actually.

Andorra

I have read the other 6 books and it has been pure joy.
So Audible, why did you change it?
This new narrator is not my kind of narrator. Really, is she the one for a series like this? I don't know where Kate Reading belong but not here. This is the receipt of "how to destroy a good story"
