Sintesi dell'editore

Something has gone foul in the Black Hills, something gravely unnatural. Leave it to Violet Parker to stumble into the middle of it. A creepy phone call, a dead body, two meddling detectives, and a glut of troublemaking ex-partners - can things get any worse? Violet swears to keep her nose out of police business this time. But when her son is linked to the victim, she returns to the scene of the crime. More than just a mystery to solve, now her son might be in mortal danger.

More of Violet's adventures in Deadwood

This is a sub-par entry in the Deadwood Mysteries series by Ann Charles. Not a heck of a lot happens in the first half of the book, and rather than being a self-contained mystery within a larger multi-book story arc (as the earlier books were) just ends on a cliff-hanger of a revelation. I hate that!

Violet, an incredibly strong character in most aspects of her life, continues to doubt her relationship with Doc. Or rather, Doc's feelings for her. "Does he love me? Oh, he can't love a woman with kids! He told Tiffany he didn't want to get married! Does he love me?" Over and over and over. But she won't ask him because she's afraid of the answer. Their sex scenes are fewer in this book, but remain X rated.

All that being said, I did enjoy it, and if you have read the previous 4 books in the series, you will definitely want to read this one. The story arc of paranormal happenings in Deadwood, and Violet's place in them are moved forward, albeit grudgingly.

Caroline Shaffer's narration continues to shine. Every character, male and female, is clearly defined. Her voicing of Old Man Harvey continues to be a hoot.

I'm going to finish with a pet peeve. I can't understand why the Audible version of this series is not released at the same time as the books. This book was published more than a year ago, and there is now a 6th book out which still isn't on Audible. Record them faster, people! This is a series that really comes alive with a good narrator.

Just 1 question...

Are we supposed to HATE Violet? I have hung in to this point because the writing is good, the story line is interesting & the performance is well done. I figured Violet would grow as a character over time, ya know, like most real people. To be fair, I am writing this review halfway through the book. I'm trying to hold out hope that the shift in Violet's absurdly immature personality will occur after she finally faces her ex & learns the truth about her roll in the supernatural aspect of her life. I want to continue because I really want to see where the author take the storyline but there is 1 problem. I HATE VIOLET! Like, to the point I have to turn the book off for awhile until I forget how much I hate her. She doesn't really seem to try to be good at her job. Instead, she just chases after Doc & puts up with the misogynistic b/s from co-worker & now her boss. Then complains about her job being in jeopardy. She is completely disrespectful to the police detective because of his "alfa male" attitude & just now seemed to realize that her actions may actually effect his job. She denies what's right in front of her & makes poor & dangerous choices constantly. She lies to pretty much everyone all the time but expects everyone around her to be understanding & forgiving... I know she is supposed to be a 30- something mother of 2 but she acts like a 14 year old spoiled brat with daddy issues. Please let her become less annoying so I can go on with this series.

Laughs and suspense from the very beginning!

I love all of Ann Charles books! The Audible version really does a great job of "bringing them to life". I highly recommend you give them a listen - you'll be laughing out loud one minute and cringing in suspense a beat later!

No no no

How do you write the character this smart to be so damn dumb. There was absolutely no reason whatsoever for her to not tell her office, and everyone she knows. That the worthless piece of shit Rex was dangerous to her and her children. Fucking stupid!!!

Ugh. Cliffhanger

Decent enough, kept my interest wanting to know what will happen. But then ends with no conclusions of anything. Don’t start if you’re thinking it might be good standalone.

same formula

Lots of plot threads but none are completed. An annoying ex comes to town; that thread is left hanging. There are some strange killers in Deadwood; this is an ongoing story line. Then the reveal/cliffhanger at the end that is not a very big surprise.
At least this one didn't have mispronunciations by the narrator. Also there was only one tedious sex scene, and less of the awful sex talk/banter between Doc and Violet. Thankfully there is less of Ray and his bullying abuse that everyone seems to condone. Since Doc and Violet have hooked up other new couples are being lined up to hook up presumably in later stories.

This Is A Great Series

This is a great series. I enjoy the banter of the characters and the twists and turns in the plot. The Kindle version is available on Amazon, but, I'm waiting for It to be available on Audible. The narrator brings the story to life and makes the book more enjoyable.

I could not sleep before I finished this

It’s getting creepy around violet and her story in deadwood. And I’m liking it. But it does leave me with sleepless nights. Who needs sleep tho. Where’s the next book?
