“Luminous with insight and wonder. Among the Birds is at once an invitation to closer, more generous attention, and a brilliant call to unsettle our familiarity into richer and surprising understandings and relationships. Birds are often not what they seem—their intelligences and ecologies embody evolution’s trickster, creative spirit—and here are words and art worthy of this lively, nuanced complexity.”

“Among the Birds is a glorious meander through nature with a keen-eyed friend. Ever thoughtful and often wry, Haupt gently cajoles us into a deeper state of attention, celebrating what she aptly calls the ‘river of bird secrets’ that surrounds us, waiting to instruct, enrich, and inspire.”

“Among the Birds is equal parts edifying, playful, and vulnerable—it strikes my heart like a love letter to our inextricable natural connection with birds. Lyanda Lynn Haupt impresses with her prose, her knowledge, and her ability to perceive and describe the magic of the natural world around us. Her missives on the quintessential characters of the Pacific Northwest are a joy to read—a playful romp full of scientific knowledge, cultural insight, and lyrical writing.”

“Among the Birds is as welcome as spring birdsong. This collection makes for a delightful flock of surprises, insights, and stories that reveals even robins, starlings, and turkey vultures as astonishing marvels—and the owls, the cranes, the tufted puffins! Within these pages, you’ll find delight, wisdom, and wonder.”
