I really wanted to like these series
Set in the UK in a near future, a pulmonary disease wipes out most of the population, leaving just a few untouched. Some people start gathering with the plan of starting a new society in which everyone should be a valuable member.
I love post-apocalyptic stories, so I was looking forward to listening to this one; and also, it is narrated by R.C. Bray! The premises were good, and the events are the ones expected in almost every post-apocalyptic book. One of the problems was just that one: the lack of originality. There is nothing that we haven't seen before in other books, movies, or TV shows. This could have perfectly been part of The Walking Dead. There are no zombies, which counts as a favorable point for me, but there was nothing else that made these books stand out.
I found that there were too many characters in the story. I have read other books with lots of characters, but this one has a never-ending cast. They are all archetypes with absolutely no character development, which prevented me from connecting to them.
The story dragged... a lot. There were some events happening here and there but most of the time the main things that happened were: new people arriving, organizing people, looking for supplies, repeat.
I really wanted to like these series, especially after reading the rave reviews it received, and seeing that there are six books published; but for the life of me, I just didn't get the point.
R.C. Bray is a great narrator, one my favorites, but I don't understand the decision of having an American narrator for a book set in the UK, especially since at some points he needs to imitate certain accents from the UK. Sadly there was not enough consistency among them, and the fact that the main narration was done in an American accent (but with British terms), completely broke the rhythm of the story, distracting me from the important things. I also have to say that, although Bray performed really well in books like The Martian, his narration of 'After it Happened' seemed quite monotone, and the only aspects I can really mention as excellent were the characters' interpretations and the audio production.

After It Happened: Books 1-2
The story is right up to my alley and the narrator makes it even better. R.C Bray brings into life a whole cavalcade of post apocalyptic refugees with intriguing stories to be told.
If you like:

Purchased yesterday... finished today
This 12 hour post apocalypse book is so fresh and interesting. I honestly couldn't stop listening and now am sorry that I can't pick up the next installment... yet. Set in present day England with a 99% die off from a flu like illness, it is pleasantly devoid of zombies and filled with interesting survivors as they face the new and changing environment with different choices.
I recommended to my prepper brother... he picked up already, but it will have a broader audience. It delivers a solid dose of the British saying "Stay Calm and Carry On." It is full of the hard realities of the environment, but it doesn't feel like gratuitous violence or sex and profanity is limited.
The narrator is perfect for the character and a solid 5. Story gets a 5 from me, if only for the uniqueness of this event and creativity. Probably a 4 for those not a fan of the genre.

Apocalypse & No Zombies
Finally an apocalyptic story that shows what could really happen in a full blown catastrophic bio pandemic. Well done and masterfully performed by RC Bray the master. Cannot wait for the next instalment. Great series.

Seriously? The sequels aren't available on Audible? Good grief, that is disappointing! I've thoroughly enjoyed the story thus far and am bummed I can't continue with it. Come on, Audible, record those other books!

The Land of the Wandering Accents
Would you try another book from Devon C. Ford and/or R. C. Bray?
Sure. I like Ford, and I think Bray is usually great. Problem here is Bray couldn't keep his accents straight.

No. I don't buy everyone going nuts and trying to kill each other when there is no struggle to survive. I also don't see how everyone is just fine living as slaves for the main character's communist prison. No one seems too extremely bothered by everyone they ever knew dying suddenly.

Hard to listen to...
I just finished the book ‘Gray’. It was a 24 hour long audiobook and I devoured it in 3 days. This book was suggested, as it was the same general premise as Gray. Reviews were high, with many people commenting on how great the narrator is. I whole heartedly disagree. The monotone delivery is unbearable to listen to. The act of, say, eating a sandwich, is delivered with the same intonation as a battle seen. It was difficult to discern action from daily events.
And the story doesn’t go anywhere. A protagonist is vaguely referred to and the book ends with this person still at large and plotting to return to exact revenge. I don’t even care enough to seek out the follow up to this book. The ‘hero’ never fails at anything, and every confrontation is easily overcome, regardless of the build up to it, it’s over with a cheeky exchange. I would rather listen to Gray for a second time then labor through a second half of this book.

Very Good Story and Very Enjoyable
Okay. First of all, it's narrated by RC Bray, So even if it was a shopping list it would sound spectacular, The story is good as is the character development. The story is realistic, not your usual, unlimited round magazines and indestructible hero's, running on broken legs.
The only thing that concerns me; is the length - 12hrs 38 mins for 2 books and a chapter or two of book 3 is worrisome. I would love to continue to purchase this series but that is reliant upon the author providing the hours of entertainment per buck. Too many authors now think 4 to 6 hours and only half a story is worth the cost of a full story. Hopefully, this author, will realise what most people want and will endeavour to provide value for money, rather than lose customers due to subjective overpricing.
Getting back to the books - The storyline is incredibly believable, the characters too seam realistic portrayals and the story moves at a quick pace without the usual dead spots, that whilst necessary, the listeners hate, as they wait for the next installment of the storyline. Can't wait to get Society when it's released. I'm sure this series will prove to be long-lived and eagerly awaited. I don't see the point of detailing the story as it would be pointless only know that it's definitely a Zompoc fans must have.
As a final point - Well worth the investment and you will not be disappointed with the story or the purchase.

Logical Survivors
Devon C Ford chose his title well. There's nothing new about the premise, a terrible disease wipes the vast majority of humanity out. But this book isn't about that part and it's all over and forgotten about with breathtaking speed. The characters seem to immediately accept it's pretty much game over for the whole planet and largely get on with things.
What it is about is a group of survivors trying to build a new society for themselves. They actually get very logical very quickly and the story speaks to the human need for identity and purpose which while the book possibly skirts a lot of the other situational psychology is often overlooked in the genre. There is action, violence and disagreement but there is also a lot about the building of a fledgling society. To me it was very satisfying as a read.
So what about the narration? Hmm, this is where I hope not too many people read this one because I love RC Bray but I can't quite give him the usual five stars. This is a very English book and I have to say that while he does his usual brilliant job I do think one of the better English narrators might have given the book a little more of a unique local character.
Finally I note that the publisher / author have decided to combine each pair of books into these Publisher's packs. I say bravo! Shorter books are fine but I think that if you are going to produce a series each book should be a reasonable length. I don't expect every author to match the imperious Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight series at nearly 50 hours per book but 5 or 6 hours would definitely have been too little.

Great story, great characters dodgy narration
I really enjoyed these two books. The characters are great and it's nice to read a survival story that doesn't include zombies. Unfortunately, the usually good RC Bray was a poor choice for narrator. He reads well but as an American is pretty much completely incapable of reading in an English accent. His Scottish is ropey too and I'm pretty sure he's never even heard a Welsh accent because his attempts at one are laughable. Such a shame because it's easy to forget this is a British story with the constant American accent. And when Bray attempts one of the British accents it is jarring and pulls me out of the story. Ruins the enjoyment somewhat. BUT having said all that, it's still worth listening to for the characters and story. I've bought the next two books on the strength on these two.

LOVE RC BRAY - best Narrator there is
The first two books are good. Shame none of the others have been added to Audible. I would almost advise not getting this until the rest are added.

Absurd Escapist Prepper Fiction. Not All Bad.
I should say that I did get to the end. It's strangely listenable despite everything that comes next. Partially owing to the quality off the narration.
So clearly this book is strongly targeted at a specific demographic with which I fit enough to have had the book mistakenly recommended. Bad algorithm. One example of how the demographic is served is in the bizarrely intense focus given to the intricate specifics of the story's guns, and the various attachments and modification applied to them. I feel like I know our survivor group's arsenal better than I know its members. Another example is in the clear political pandering of the author to traditional prepper notions and values. "Far truer if harsher justice than that found in the world before" narrated the main character, as he planned its enforcement in accordance with his own whims. "Left wing" is used as an insult (by the narrator, not in dialogue) to describe fools who don't immediately expect the world to fall into mad-maxian anarchy, and aren't eager to go with it.
Fortunately for our protagonist, the author makes this psychopath correct. Apparently about half the population of the UK just can't wait for "the event" so they can unleash their inner monsters, doing so ludicrously promptly in the apocalypse's wake. There's no continuing danger (as for example in a Zombie Apocalypse fiction) to drive people to such evils; it's just how the author thinks we all intrinsically are I guess. Survivors are almost always encountered in the clutches of savage petty-despots (despite the ridiculous statistical improbability of this repeatedly happening in an apparently near deserted world), and our "hero" is always ready to step up and save them. His only flaw is the dangerous rage and unparalleled lethal capabilities he has, but always keeps nigh-perfectly under control, such that they're clearly not really flaws other than as lip-service to the stereotype of a flawed genius of his field (survivalism).
He is witty (not actually, but we're always told that he gets laughs from the helpless sheep who surround him), and popular, an inspiring leader of the group, and yet a lone-wolf, who has a deep soul and hidden depth, backed by a cliché traumatic past. He spends all his time worrying that the armed forces of the group are woefully undermanned, even early on when they outnumber the band's farming contingent. I don't think the author really paints the picture of a sustainable society in terms of division of labor. Why is the medical team so large, and why are people not taking turns performing the more menial tasks? Our protagonist accuses others of trying to set up communist dictatorships, whilst himself observing that "rank has privileges" and forcing others to obey rules he sets and then permits only himself to break.
The adversaries to the group are all poorly fleshed out, and frankly dumb. All our hero's plans come off flawlessly, his opponents behaving exactly as he plans (IE: not as remotely rational actors). If he launches an ambush, you can be damn sure the opposition will all stand ready in the open. It is a world where these men can be effective enough to build large bands of followers, oppressing numerous slaves, and yet will stand in the open, guileless and entirely ineffectual in the face of The Special One.
If you're looking for absurd escapist fantasy, this could be enjoyable. A realistic portrayal of post-apocayptia it is not, nor a guide to surviving anything other than a narcissist's delusions of grandeur.

Can't wait for the next one
Normally I use audio books to help me sleep but sadly this one failed in that respect. I found myself listening for hours totally engrossed.

good story, dodgy accents
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and normally love RC Bray's performances. the accents were a little annoying but I soon got over it.
