What begins as a locked-room puzzle takes us across the Atlantic into the alkali desert of Utah, to a wagon train of pioneers, a girl who chose the wrong man to love, and a promise of vengeance kept for twenty years. When the truth comes, it is not a monster who stands in the dock but a man with a story that will not let you hate him.
