Sintesi dell'editore

Penny Nichols has the London apartment, the classic cat, the villa in France, the fabulous bank account, and the great guy to share them all with. So everything's perfect, right? Er, well...Pennies, nickels....

Pursued by gigolos, gold diggers, an ex-wife, and highly aggressive salesmen, all chasing after their millions, freelancer-turned-heiress Penny Nichols and her boyfriend, Jeremy, decide to take a whole summer off and sock away most of their inheritance. But they allow themselves one big splurge from their wish list - and that's where all the trouble begins....and a boatload of secrets.

At an auction on the French Riviera, Penny and Jeremy win much more than they bargain for, as they uncover a centuries-old rivalry involving the theft of a strange, priceless treasure linked to Beethoven's Germany. Investigating everything from a 1920s yacht on the Mediterranean, to the legendary superstitionsof the island of Corsica, right up to a castle on Lake Como, Italy, Penny and Jeremy track down a mysterious elderly count whose fractured memory may hold the key piece of this fascinating historical puzzle.

A Rather Mixed Review

This book was like watching a so-so episode of your favourite TV series. You’ll keep watching and you’ll tune in again next week for more despite a less than great instalment.

I liked the overall scenario, I liked the characters, I liked the writing, I especially liked the setting in the French Riviera… but I did not like the mystery of the lion; it bored me.

Frankly, I could have skipped that plotline completely and I just enjoy reading about how Penny and Jeremy plan to build their lives together – getting married and setting up their future etc. Of course in the long run that would not be very interesting, but since they are still new to me and I feel like I am getting to know them, I would not have minded a book of “just filler”.

The narration is stellar! I would give it 10 stars if I could.

Good to pass the time

C.A. Belmond's books are a bit of fun to add to a routine day. Personally, I preferred the first and third books in this series, but best to read no. 2 before proceeding on to no. 3. Why not give it a try?

HUGE waste of time

I honestly don't know why I bothered finishing this book. First of all, the story is incredible boring. There's maybe one moment of excitement, and during that time I found myself wishing that the bad guys would get Penny and end the book right there. She's not an interesting character. I find her extraordinarily predictable and obnoxious.

Beyond the dreadful story and unlikable main character, the language in this book is utterly excessive. Everything is described down to the most minute detail. I can't tell you how many time I hit the fast forward button in order to make it through a particularly nauseating description.

The first book in this series was cute and interesting, so I was excited to get started on the second. I have the third book in my library, but after this disaster of a novel, I'm far from certain that the next book will be worth my time.

The only redeeming quality of this audiobook is Katherine Kellgren's consistently perfect narration. She is by far the best narrator I've ever listened to, with a particular gift for bringing each character to life. If only this gift hadn't been wasted on such useless characters.

Surprisingly Good

I enjoyed the first book but I didn't think the second one would be as good because there is no murder. However, it has an entertaining and funny plot and likable characters. I will probably read the next book just because I like the characters and the shenanigans they get into.

Charming series

Great for fans of the Royal Spyness series by Rhys Bowen and the same narrator.

The First Book Was Better

Any additional comments?

This book was an ok "read" but not as satisfying as the first book in the series. A couple of danger elements weren't well explained. I'll probably listen to the rest of the series though, since Katherine Kellgren is the narrator.

Love The Narrator

I found this series by looking for what books KK read. I enjoyed this book. It is nice to have a light read from time to time and that has humour.

A great fantasy

I want this life. This series is just a fun filled romp that reminds me of the Thin Man series only with less martinis.

Wonderful story, magnificently narrated!

Katherine Kellgren is an incredibly amazing talent. She could make Levitcus enticing! I absolutely love her intricate vocal characterizations. Anything she narrates is an absolute must have!!

Fun and pleasant cozy mystery

This is the 2nd in the series and I've enjoyed both. They're light mysteries and in general a fun listen for me. I sincerely appreciate that there's no foul language or porn in the book. I'm looking forward to other books in this series.
