Thomas Carrick is a gentleman driven to control all aspects of his life. As the wealthy owner of Carrick Enterprises, located in bustling Glasgow, he is one of that city's most eligible bachelors and fully intends to select an appropriate wife from the many young ladies paraded before him. He wants to take that necessary next step along his self-determined path, yet no young lady captures his eye, much less his attention - not in the way Lucilla Cynster does, even though she lives miles away.

Storia
When James Everard announced that he had invited a young lady home for the holidays, his father, the Earl of Gyllford, was astounded and skeptical. Could it be that Jamie was finally showing an interest in something other than horseplay with his friends? But when lovely Miss Evalyn Pennington arrived at Gyllford Manor, it was the earl who found himself inexplicably drawn to her winsome beauty. Having been dismissed from her post as a governess, Evalyn would long remember the kindness of being welcomed at Gyllford Manor when she had nowhere else to turn.

Sintesi dell'editore
Caroline Evans is a single mom trying to raise her 15-year-old daughter, Issy, as best she can. Her ex-husband, James, was a philandering charmer, and a wealthy one at that. Their life had been lavish, but Caroline couldn't put up with his cheating and left him, taking Issy with her. And Issy has never forgiven her for this.
Now, they live in the countryside outside London, where Caroline has built a modestly successful catering business, and Issy is now at an all-girls boarding school. Things are beginning to feel normal. But when James mysteriously appears on her doorstep one night and then vanishes soon after, Caroline feels her world being turned upside down once again. Delving into a world of high-stakes finance she knows little about, Caroline and Issy must find a wary peace, and solve a murder. And Caroline also finds herself guarding a wounded heart against yet another man who seems determined to win her over.
With trademark twists and turns and memorable characters, Elizabeth Adler delivers another summer getaway novel that will leave you gasping for more.

Quite Enjoyable
If you could sum up A Place in the Country in three words, what would they be?
A pleasant"read"
What did you like best about this story?
I liked that this woman moved on from her hurtful past.
What does Charlotte Anne Dore bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I liked her articulation. Really liked listening to her.
Any additional comments?
I enjoy Elizabeth Adler and this book was no exception. I have never had an audio book of hers before, so this was new. Not a disappointment.

Good listen for commuters
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Absolutely, considering I have a 45 minute commute to and from work. This book kept me entertained.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Well, that's hard to say. I guess I'll go with the dynamic between mother and daughter being the most interesting, and the dynamic between mother and lover being the least interesting. Or maybe it's the other way around.
Did Charlotte Anne Dore do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
I would have to say yes - I was able to easily identify each character by the sound of the narrator's voice.
Did A Place in the Country inspire you to do anything?
Honestly, not really, other than to visit England before I die.
Any additional comments?
This book could have been so much more. The mystery of who kills the ex-husband was so shallow that it was predictable. I expected a web of mystery that never appeared. In the end, this book was entertaining to listen to while it lasted, but it fell short of being a great book. Definately not the best audio book I've ever listed to.
